Depression=Lack of Motivation?

Lack of motivation is so tricky.  People that experience depression often tell me they would like to stay under the covers and hide from responsibility.  It is scary because if we are not able to show up, physically or mentally how can we “meet our goals” or “follow our dreams”?

In the attached article, the writer states that she cannot focus and she is not making progress in her studies because of it. Some suggestions to deal with this are:

  1. It is important to recognize the steps that we take every day. They may seem small, but they are the most powerful ones, if they keep us going.
  2. Talk, text or email a friend or family member.
  3. Read the attached article, the comments below her article are encouraging and prove we are not alone.

At Joanna Ford Counseling, I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to work with clients that are experiencing depression and lack of motivation. Depression may be a part of your life but there are ways to manage it. The words we tell ourselves about depression and lack of motivation are important to look at together.
