Fear

Fear can motivate us to behave many ways. Wikipedia says: Fear is a feeling induced by perceived danger or threat that occurs in certain types of organisms, which causes a change in metabolic and organ functions and ultimately a change in behavior, such as fleeing, hiding, or freezing from perceived traumatic events. Fear in human beings may occur in response to a specific stimulus occurring in the present, or in anticipation or expectation of a future threat perceived as a risk to body or life.

Fear Based Behaviors

Some behaviors we might engage in are: worry, violence,  self judgement, judging others, self harm, harming others, addictive behaviors, social withdrawal, hate and guilt. These behaviors can make it difficult for us to engage in meaningful relationships.  It can create a space between us and other people. It can create feelings of “I am right, you are wrong” and these words can divide us.

Fear is a natural response and it is okay to experience it. It does not have to be ignored. After the initial traumatic event, it may take some time to process where the fear is in our bodies and how we want to, or don’t want to express it.  You do not have to pretend it does not exist. You do have to be kind to yourself, you deserve to live a peaceful life.

How to Find Help when Experiencing Fear

Fear can bring about hopelessness, anxiety and depression. It is always good to reach out to a friend, family member, counselor, spiritual advisor, or co worker. Sometimes others are experiencing similar feelings and we can realize we are not alone. Take steps to take care of yourself, stay hydrated, eat well and by all means pet your cat or dog, play your video game, watch your streaming videos, take a run, go to yoga. Remember, though, that we all need each other, and that we all experience fear.
