Asking For Help

Asking for help is not as easy as it sounds. It takes some practice. It takes courage. Sometimes we think people should notice if we are struggling. They don’t notice. They don’t check in. We think people might be too busy to check in. We do not want to burden others.

How to Ask For Help

Consider how you feel when someone asks you for help. You probably want to make an effort in some way to support the person asking. Helping others sometimes makes people feel needed. Think about what person in your life might be easier to talk to.

Pick The Person To Talk To

Maybe there is someone that comes to mind. Maybe you have to think about it. Identify a person who is approachable in your life. Check out this blog from a few years ago, https://www.joannafordcounseling.com/2017/02/10/human-beings-are-lovely/ If you are able to write down what you need or how you want to say it, that could be helpful. If you can be clear about what you need assistance with, that is great. You may also need help figuring it out. Try to pick someone that is patient and thoughtful.

Is Small Talk Necessary?

You may not feel up to it, but small talk can be helpful. Sharing a small amount of information with people can create a connection. People do seem to love to talk about the weather, so you can start there. If you live in Colorado, you can talk about the snow! Check out this article on how to connect with someone.
